All Soulsâ Night
Darren went flying through the waiting room wall, while Salem and I ran straight into a row of chairs and toppled over them. I was too pumped full of adrenaline to realize how much pain I was going to be in. Salem recovered first, being a draugr, and offered to help me up. I took his hand and thanked him. I paused, holding his hand and looking at him. He didnât feel dead-cold like Rafal, and he didnât look like any other draugr Iâd ever met. He was the closest thing Iâd ever seen to the work of the best necromancers that had ever existed, the True Vampyres. I couldnât help but wonder who had made him.
I turned away and studied the room. I was freaked that our re-entry into the human realm had screwed us, but looking around, I saw only Cheetoh sitting quietly in a chair watching TV.
âWhat the hell is happening in here?â an angry female voice growled from the hallway.
I turned to see the intake nurse standing in the doorway and looking particularly pissed off at us.
âThey make noise. Man upset. His friend is dead,â Cheetoh told the nurse from her chair.
The nurseâs scowl softened, and she nodded in understanding. âJust pick them up, please. Iâm sorry for your loss.â
After the nurse left, I couldnât help but laugh a bit at Cheetoh. Then I remembered Darren.
âDarren?â I whispered. I felt my heart rate rising. He had to be there. There was no way that creature could cross over into the human realm. No way, I told myself.
Darren stumbled back through the waiting room wall and I sighed in relief.
As he straightened himself out, he said, âThereâs a bathroom on the other side of this wall and I donât recommend any of you using it. Iâve seen things.â
I smiled.
